The iconic “Pink Devil,” dressed in desert pink and the size of a little child, brutally hunts down other players in the firearm-focused environment of the virtual reality game Gun Gale Online. But in reality, this dreaded player killer is not who you’d think.

Karen Kohiruimaki, a bashful university student in Tokyo, stands in sharp contrast to her in-game avatar—and she also looms above everyone else, much to her dismay. Karen’s concerns over her height drive her to seek solace in the virtual world. Starting game after game in hopes of manifesting as a cute, small character, she eventually obtains her ideal self in the universe of Gun.
